BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -DaJuan Summers had 18 points and nine rebounds and No. 5 Georgetown dominated down the stretch to beat Alabama 70-60 in the first game of the SEC/Big East Invitational on Wednesday night.
The Hoyas (6-0) went on a 14-1 run after the Crimson Tide (4-3) briefly took the lead in the final minutes, giving up only a free throw in the final four minutes before allowing a last-second basket.
Georgetown turned up the defensive heat against an Alabama team relying heavily on freshmen, forcing bad passes and tough shots.
Roy Hibbert added 14 points, nine boards and four blocked shots for The Hoyas. He was 8-of-12 from the free-throw line as the smaller Tide mostly denied the 7-foot-2 center the ball or fouled him when he got it around the basket.
Jessie Sapp added 12 points and Alabama native Jonathan Wallace scored 11 for the Hoyas.
No. 3 Kansas 85, Eastern Washington 47
LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – Darrell Arthur and Darnell Jackson dominated inside and Kansas cruised to an easy victory over undersized and outmanned Eastern Washington.
Eastern Washington (3-7) had only nine players at the start of the game and was reduced to eight with 16:40 remaining when guard Gary Gibson fouled out. Until Trey Gross got a bucket with about 5 minutes left to make it 69-37, only three Eagles had scored.
Kansas enjoyed a big size advantage and the 6-foot-8 Jackson had 17 points and nine rebounds while the 6-9 Arthur had 15 and six.
Adris DeLeon, a 5-11 guard, had 24 points for Eastern Washington on 8-of-11 shooting.
No. 4 Texas 88, North Texas 72
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) – There was no letdown for the streaking Texas Longhorns.
D.J. Augustin had 29 points and 10 assists and Texas ran its record to 8-0 with a win over North Texas, three days after pulling off one of the Longhorns’ biggest road wins in recent years at UCLA.
A..J. Abrams added 23 points for the Longhorns, who cruised to a big early lead, and then watched North Texas cut it under 10 in the second half before pulling away down the stretch.
Damion James added 12 points and 10 rebounds for Texas. Josh White led North Texas (5-2) with 28 points, hitting six 3-pointers.
No. 12 Pittsburgh 73, Duquesne 68
PITTSBURGH (AP) – Levance Fields scored four consecutive points in the final minute and Pittsburgh held off a frantic rally by city rival Duquesne to remain unbeaten.
Sam Young had 23 points and five rebounds to counter Shawn James’ 20 points, nine rebounds and five blocks for Duquesne (6-2), which never led but closed to within one point several times after falling behind 14-0 in the opening 3 1/2 minutes.
Mike Cook added 12 points and Fields and DeJuan Blair had 10 each for Pitt, which is 8-0 for the sixth consecutive season and has never lost to Duquesne in eight games as a ranked team.
Pitt won its seventh in a row in the rivalry known as the City Game and ninth in 11 games against Duquesne, which hasn’t beaten a ranked team since 1997.
No. 18 Clemson 82, East Carolina 67
GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) – Freshman Terrence Oglesby hit six 3-pointers and scored a season-high 22 points to help Clemson beat East Carolina.
Fellow rookie Demontez Stitt had 13 points and five assists for the Tigers (8-0), who took control midway through the first half and never looked back.
Sam Hinnant scored 16 points to lead the Pirates (3-5), who led by three early before Clemson’s defense locked down to fuel a 17-point spurt and help the Tigers build a big halftime lead. East Carolina fell to 0-57 all-time against Atlantic Coast Conference teams.
No. 20 BYU 72, Weber State 57
PROVO, Utah (AP)- Trent Plaisted had 14 points, 15 rebounds and five blocked shots to overcome a slow start on offense and lead BYU past Weber State.
Sam Burgess and Jonathan Tavernari scored five points each during a balanced 22-6 first-half run that opened a commanding 19-point lead.
Burgess finished with a game-high 16 points for BYU (7-1), which won its 35th straight home game, the second-longest home winning streak in the country.
Freshman center Trevor Morris scored all of his season-high 12 points in the second half to lead Weber State (2-5).
No. 21 Xavier 79, Creighton 66
CINCINNATI (AP) – Drew Lavender scored 17 points in a tone-setting first half, and Xavier used another balanced, blink-of-an-eye run to set up a victory over previously undefeated Creighton.
The Musketeers (7-1) won their sixth in a row behind their 5-foot-7 point guard, who finished with a season-high 28 points and a career-high 10 assists.
Creighton came in allowing an average of only 54 per game, seventh-best in the country. No one had scored more than 62 against the Bluejays this season. Xavier topped that mark with 9:39 left in the game.
B.J. Raymond added 15 for Xavier, which had four players in double figures. P’Allen Stinnett led Creighton (5-1) with 12.
No. 23 Vanderbilt 83, Wake Forest 80
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – A.J. Ogilvy made a hook shot with 30 seconds to play and then hit two free throws to seal Vanderbilt’s win over Wake Forest.
Ogilvy had 23 points and Shan Foster tied a season-high with 26 points, as the pair helped the Commodores (8-0) remain unbeaten.
Harvey Hale and James Johnson led Wake Forest with 18 points apiece, but late fouls cost the Demon Deacons. (5-2).
Vanderbilt’s first game as a ranked team proved to be its toughest, as Wake Forest was trying to win its first road game against a ranked foe in two years. The last time the Demon Deacons defeated a ranked opponent on the road was Jan. 22, 2005, when they took down No. 20 Cincinnati.
