BALTIMORE (AP) -Jamar Smith scored 21 points and Marquise Katley added 14 points and four assists as Morgan State defeated Longwood, 76-51, on Friday night.
Boubacar Coly scored 10 points and had nine rebounds and Reggie Holmes scored eight points for Morgan (6-4), which avenged a 75-73 loss last season in Farmville, Va.
Leading just 31-29 at intermission, Morgan opened the second half on a 6-0 run and never looked back. Forward Lamar Barrett scored Longwood?s first second-half points on a pair of free throws, which pulled the Lancers (3-11) within 37-31 with 16:13 remaining.
Morgan then responded with a 13-0 run capped by a fast break layup by Smith, which extended the Bears’ lead to 50-31 with about 12 minutes remaining. Longwood, in its first season as a Division I program, didn’t score its first field goal until Barrett connected on a three-pointer with 11:50 remaining.
Overall, Morgan outscored Longwood, 45-22, over the final 20 minutes of the game.
Morgan appeared ready to run away with the game in the first half as the Bears led 24-14 with about 10 minutes remaining following a three-pointer by Smith. However, Longwood responded with a 13-3 run and tied the game at 27 with 2:22 left before intermission following a three-pointer guard Ryan Bogan.
Bogan led the Lancers with 16 points and four rebounds. Kirk Wilson added 13 points, three rebounds and three assists for Longwood.
