STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) -Talor Battle scored 26 points and Penn State overcame another sluggish performance to hold off a feisty Mount St. Mary’s squad, 61-56, on Saturday.
The Nittany Lions (9-2) trailed briefly after the Mountaineers’ Kelly Beidler hit a layup with 19:17 left in the game to make it 27-26. However, Penn State got 14 second-half points from Battle to seal the victory.
Jamelle Cornley added 18 for Penn State. Mount St. Mary’s (3-6) was led by Shawn Atupem’s 12 points. The Mountaineers’ Jeremy Goode added 11 and Jean Cajou had 10.
Mount St. Mary’s made it 57-54 with 51 seconds to play in regulation when Atupem sank a free throw. Cornley put away the game for Penn State, hitting a layup with 20 seconds left.
Mount St. Mary’s outshot Penn State from the field, 41 to 37 percent.
