FAIRFIELD, Conn. (AP) -Ryon Howard matched a career-high 20 points to lead Sacred Heart to a 80-75 victory over Mount St. Marys in the NEC opener for both teams Thursday night.
Mount St. Marys, which defeated Sacred Heart in last years conference championship game, led 47-36 with 17:31 remaining in the second half. The Pioneers then went on a 17-2 run over the next five minutes to take control.
The Pioneers (2-3, 1-0) made five-straight 3-pointers midway through the second half and led by as many as 10 points. Sacred Heart finished the game 9-for-18 from three-point range and only 11-for-23 from the foul line.
The Mount shot 56 percent from the field in the first half, but only 32 percent in the second.
