NEW YORK (AP) -D.J. Kennedy had 17 points and 13 rebounds and St. John’s held on for a 69-61 victory over St. Francis, N.Y., on Monday night, the Red Storm’s 30th victory in their last 31 games against the Terriers.
Paris Horne had 13 points and Malik Boothe added 12 for St. John’s (6-1), which leads the series against its fellow New York City school 63-12. The only Terriers win in the 31-game stretch came in 2004, on the night St. John’s honored Hall of Fame coach Lou Carnesecca by renaming the arena in his honor.
Ricky Cadell had 11 points for St. Francis (1-4), which trailed 61-48 with 7:33 to go and was able to get to 62-59 on a 3-pointer by Kayode Ayeni with 2:05 left. The Red Storm closed the game with a 7-2 run to win their fourth straight, all at home.
St. John’s opened the game with an 8-0 run and closed the first half the same way to take a 39-20 lead, its largest of the game.
