NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -Brandon Springer scored 25 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead Cumberland to a 93-85 victory over Tennessee State in both team’s season opener on Friday night.
The Bulldogs went on a 15-2 run to give them a nine-point lead at halftime. Rodney James had two field goals and Springer hit three free throws during the spurt.
Cumberland pushed its lead to 26 points in the second half, as Tennessee State was unable to draw no closer than 13 points.
Thomas Douglas scored 18 points for the Bulldogs, while Jamar Finley added 12.
Gerald Robinson scored 31 points, hitting 16 of 17 shots from the free throw line for the Tigers. Darius Cox had 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and Stephen Evans added 12 points.
