RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -Farnold Degand scored 15 points to help North Carolina State beat Catawba 85-61 in an exhibition game Tuesday night.
Brandon Costner and Tracy Smith each had 14 points for the Wolfpack, who open the season Saturday at New Orleans. Backup point guard Javi Gonzalez added six points, five rebounds and five assists in relief of Degand, who is playing his way back from a midseason knee injury last year.
Degand hit 7 of 8 shots, including a 3-pointer on the opening possession. He also had four steals.
N.C. State shot 52 percent for the game, and took a 25-8 lead in the opening minutes for a comfortable margin it would not relinquish. Catawba got as close as 10 points after the break before the Wolfpack put the game away with an 18-4 run that pushed the margin to 73-48 with 6:02 to play.
Rob Fields scored 21 points to lead the Division II Indians.
