RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -Virginia Commonwealth’s defense held Maryland-Eastern Shore without a field goal for more than nine minutes in the first half in a 70-51 win on Friday night.
The Rams (1-0) scored nine straight points and outscored the Hawks 12-4 during the 9:03 stretch in the first half of the season opener for both teams.
VCU led 34-22 at the half and scored 11 straight points early in the second to move to a 45-24 lead and the Hawks (0-1) could get no closer than 12 the remainder of the game.
Jamal Schuler led the Rams with 15 points, hitting 3-of-4 3-pointers, and Eric Maynor added 12 points and 5 assists. VCU forced 24 turnovers, scoring 30 points on them.
Ed Tyson led the Hawks with 20 points and Ishmawiyl McFadden added 12.
