LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) – Chris Jones scored 19 points, Montrezl Harrell added 18 and No. 3 Louisville welcomed back guard Kevin Ware in its 90-61 exhibition victory over Pikeville on Wednesday night.
In their final dress rehearsal before the season opener Saturday against the College of Charleston, the defending national champion Cardinals shot 33 of 64 from the field (51.6 percent) and held the NAIA Bears to 34 percent.
But the real story was Ware’s return from the horrific right leg injury sustained in the Midwest regional final against Duke that became a rallying point during Louisville’s championship run.
The junior entered with 13:49 remaining to a standing ovation from 19,227 and needed only a couple of minutes to get into the flow. Cheered every time he touched the ball, Ware brought a huge roar by hitting a 3-pointer with 8:28 left and adding three free throws for six points in 10 minutes.
