INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Royce Waltman, an assistant to Bob Knight at Indiana and a longtime basketball coach around the Hoosier state, died Monday night after battling a long illness. He was 72.
Indiana State sports information director Ace Hunt said Waltman’s wife, Carole, notified the university of the death.
Waltman was a familiar face on the Indiana college scene for more than three decades. Most recently, he served as the color analyst on Hoosiers radio broadcasts.
Waltman became an assistant to Knight in 1981 and helped the Hoosiers win the 1987 national title. In 1990, he led DePauw to a Division III national runner-up finish. He turned the University of Indianapolis into a Division II power and led Indiana State to two straight NCAA tourney appearances.
