SALT LAKE CITY (AP) – Fresh off receiving a new, 10-year contract, New Mexico coach Steve Alford leads the Lobos into the NCAA tournament for a game against Harvard.
Alford, in his sixth year at New Mexico, has a deal that could be worth up to $2 million a year. It lasts through 2023.
His task at hand, however, is guiding his third-seeded team, winners of the Mountain West Conference, into Thursday’s game against 14th-seeded Harvard, which won the Ivy League and is in the tournament for the second straight year after a 66-year drought.
The Crimson (19-9) is led by freshman guard Siyani Chambers, who averages nearly 13 points a game.
The Lobos (29-5), led by Kendall Williams, have one of the toughest defenses in the country, allowing opponents to shoot only 38.8 percent.
