NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -Antwan Carter had a game-high 22 points and nine rebounds to lead Longwood to a 77-70 victory over New Jersey Institute of Technology Wednesday night.
A driving layup by Justin Garris gave NJIT (1-30) a 68-64 lead with 3:49 to play. But Longwood (17-14) countered with a 9-0 run over the next 2:24 to take a 73-68 lead.
Two free throws by Isaiah Wilkerson cut the margin to 73-70, but the Lancers’ Kevin Swecker and Durann Neil converted free throws in the game’s final minute to seal the win.
Dana Smith had 18 points for Longwood. Ryan Bogan (13) and Swecker (12) also finished in double figures for the Lancers.
Jheryl Wilson and Justin Garris each had 16 points for NJIT, and Gary Garris added 14.
NJIT’s only win this season, a 61-51 victory over Bryant on Jan. 21, snapped a 51-game losing streak. The Highlanders, in their third season as a Division I program, are now 6-83 since making the step up from Division II. They went winless in 2007-08.
