WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) -John Vaughan’s basket with 5 seconds left gave George Mason a 53-52 win over North Carolina-Wilmington on Wednesday night.
George Mason (19-9, 12-5 Colonial Athletic Association) led 49-40 with 3:39 to go, but the Seahawks went on a 12-2 run to take a 52-51 lead on a Montez Downey 3-pointer with 21 seconds left to play.
Downey’s basket was the first time North Carolina-Wilmington (7-23, 3-14) led since 2:33 into the game.
After the Seahawks had a 3-2 advantage, George Mason went on an 11-1 run to lead 13-4 on a Ryan Pearson jumper with 10:18 left in the first half.
Dre Smith scored 13 points and Vaughan grabbed 11 rebounds for the Patriots, who swept the Seahawks for the first time since 2004.
Tomko and Montez Downey scored 17 points each for North Carolina-Wilmington. Kevon Moore grabbed 10 rebounds for the Seahawks.
