SAN DIEGO (AP) -Brandon Johnson scored 25 points and Gyno Pomare added 20 to lead San Diego to a 63-55 victory over No. 21 Saint Mary’s on Monday night, snapping the Gaels’ five-game winning streak.
It was the second time this season the Gaels (17-3, 4-1 West Coast Conference) lost their first game after moving into the Top 25. On Dec. 11, then-No. 24 Saint Mary’s lost 71-56 at Southern Illinois, one day after moving into the rankings for the first time since March 1989.
Johnson and Pomare combined to score the first 14 points of the second half for the Toreros (11-11, 4-1) as they erased a 29-24 halftime deficit. Johnson also keyed San Diego’s 10-0 run that gave the Toreros a 58-48 lead with 1:54 left in the game.
After getting the run started with a 3-pointer, Johnson added another 3, and ended the spurt with a reverse layup.
Patrick Mills led the Gaels with 13 points and Omar Samhan added 11 points and 10 rebounds.
