Cavaliers give Irving an extension
CLEVELAND, OH (TheSpread) – The Cleveland Cavaliers are hoping to entice LeBron James to return home, and strengthened that cause on Thursday by signing Kyrie Irving to an extension.
The team announced on Thursday that they agreed to a five-year, $90 million extension with Irving, the former No. 1 pick.
The 6-3 point guard averaged 20.8 points, 6.1 assists and 1.5 steals per game last season for Cleveland. Irving shot 43 percent from the field and 86 percent from the line. He now averages 20.7 points per game for his career.
Having a piece like Irving gives the Cavs some hope in landing LeBron James. It appears that James is deciding between Cleveland and Miami, as the Cavaliers are now among the favorites to win next season’s NBA title.
According to oddsmakers at Bovada.lv, Cleveland currently has 8/1 odds to win next season’s title. But, those odds are all based on the possibility of LeBron signing. The Miami Heat are still listed as favorites at 5/1, while the Spurs have 6/1 odds.
