Chicago took Game 1 of the series 106-102 as a 7.5-point underdog on Sunday. The Bulls have now won three of five meetings with the Celtics this season. Chicago is now 42-41 overall, 17-25 on the road and 43-40 against the spread. Boston is 53-30 overall, 30-12 at home and 40-41-2 against the spread.
Game 1 was close throughout, but the Bulls made the key shots down the stretch, led by a 30-point effort from Jimmy Butler. Butler also had nine rebounds while playing 41 minutes. Bobby Portis was big off the bench, scoring 19 points and pulling down nine rebounds in the win. Chicago was 39-of-91 from the field, but more importantly 20-of-23 at the free-throw line. The Celtics shot 43 percent from the field in the loss but was just 14-of-38 from 3-point land. Isaiah Thomas put up 33 points and six assists, playing a day after his sister was killed in a car accident. He will play again tonight.
I am surprised to see the spread similar to what it was in Game 1. Chicago is a team that seems capable of making this a series. While the Celtics may bounce back and win, I don’t see them running away from Chicago. Boston hasn’t been a team to beat opponents by a great margin. They only had a scoring differential of +3.8 at home this season. Look for the Bulls to keep this game close once again.
