MARTINSVILLE, Va. (AP) – Kevin Harvick isn’t counting himself out of the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship, even if others have midway through the 10-race playoffs.
Harvick trails points leader and four-time defending champion Jimmie Johnson by 77 points in the standings and is 36 behind runner-up Denny Hamlin.
History is not on Harvick’s side. He has raced 18 times on the short, narrow oval at Martinsville Speedway and never won. Johnson and Hamlin, meanwhile, have combined to win the last eight visits to the track.
But Harvick says that in a year when so much has gone right, anything can happen. He’s even using teammate Clint Bowyer’s pit crew this weekend, hoping to improve his pit road performance.
