INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Dario Franchitti will finally get a chance to defend a Indianapolis 500 title – four years late.
After winning the 2007 race and that year’s IndyCar points title with Michael Andretti’s team, the Scottish driver left the series, joined Chip Ganassi’s NASCAR team and never got a chance to defend his championship.
The three-time points champ – and now two-time Indy 500 winner – knows this will be a busy month. As the defending champion, he has dozens of requests from the media and sponsors, and on Monday night he’ll host a private fundraiser for Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis.
It’s all part of being a champion, and Franchitti wants to savor every precious moment this year.
