DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) – Kurt Busch has won the exhibition Budweiser Shootout in part because Denny Hamlin was penalized for driving below the yellow line at Daytona International Speedway.
Hamlin crossed the finish line first, but NASCAR ruled his pass was illegal. He was black-flagged and dropped to 12th – the last car on the lead lap of Saturday night’s race.
It was the first NASCAR race on the new pavement at Daytona, and the smooth surface produced speeds that at times went over 200 mph. It also created a new form of racing as two cars linked up to push each other around the oval.
Ryan Newman, Hamlin, Busch and Jamie McMurray had pulled away from the pack by the final lap, and Hamlin dove low to pass Newman for the win. Busch pulled McMurray around Newman on the top of the track.
But Hamlin was immediately disqualified for going below the out-of-bounds line.
