2011 Quaker State 400 Predictions
(The Spread) - The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series makes its inaugural visit to Kentucky Speedway for the Quaker State 400 on Saturday night.
Kentucky Speedway is a 1.5-mile, D-shaped oval. It has 14 degrees of banking in the turns, eight degrees on the front stretch, and four degrees on the backstretch. Kentucky Speedway is similar to Kansas, which has 15 degrees in the turns, 10 degrees on the front stretch, and five degrees on the backstretch. Most of the drivers have spent time testing at Kentucky, but testing and racing are obviously two different animals.
Practice will be very important this week, as there are multiple practice sessions. Thus, drivers and crew chiefs should have plenty of time to figure this new track out, so play close attention to each and every practice session this week.
Edwards is one driver that you expect to be up front in almost every cookie-cutter race, with this weekend being no exception. He posted top-5 finishes at both Kansas and Michigan, and also won at Las Vegas, which are tracks very similar to Kentucky. Edwards has also been in the top-10 in driver average for every intermediate race this year, which has always been a very good indication of how a team will do on similar tracks throughout the season. Look for Edwards to bounce back this weekend after last week’s fiasco at Daytona.
Kenseth is one driver you can never count out whenever they race at a cookie-cutter track. He finished second at Michigan, sixth at Kansas and also ran well at Texas and California, which are like Kentucky in many ways. Ever since Kenseth broke into this series he has shown a real fondness for this type of track and a win Saturday night would go a long way in proving how well he runs on this type of track.
Newman started strong this season on the intermediate tracks, with fifth place finishes at both Las Vegas and California, and has finished outside of the top-15 in just one of his cookie-cutter starts this year. He will be bringing a car that has ran well before on this type of track and could surprise everyone this weekend.
