Martin wins the Daytona pole

DAYTONA BEACH, FL (TheSpread) – Mark Martin was just a bit faster than Daytona 500 winner, Trevor Bayne, in Friday’s qualifying for the Coke Zero 400 and now Martin will start first in Saturday’s race.

Martin finished with a speed of 182.065 mph, while Bayne had a speed of 182.002. They were the only two to reach over 182 mph in qualifying.

According to oddsmakers at online sports book Bodog, Dale Earnhardt Jr. is now the sole favorite to win with 7/1 odds. Kevin Harvick and Tony Stewart each have 9/1 odds to win while Clint Bowyer has 10/1 odds.

Dale Jr. will start sixth in Saturday’s race. Earnhardt Jr. is seventh in the point standings, 65 out of first. Dale Jr. is winless on the year but has three top 5’s and eight top 10’s. Dale Jr. has two wins at Daytona with eight top 5’s and 13 top 10’s. Earnhardt has an average finish of 14.8 at the track and a driver rating of 87.3, which ranks ninth in the series.

Harvick qualified 31st for the race. Harvick is currently second in the point standings, 25 points behind Carl Edwards for first place. Harvick has three wins this year, most of any driver. He also has nine top 10’s. Harvick has won twice at Daytona and has five top 5’s and eight top 10’s there. His average finish at the track is 15.9 and his driver rating is 84.7, which is 12th amongst active drivers.

Stewart will start 19th on Saturday. Stewart is currently 12th in the standings. He has just one top five on the year. Stewart has three wins at Daytona with seven top 5’s. His average finish at the track is 16.9 and his driver rating is 100.6, which ranks second amongst current drivers.

Bowyer qualified third for this race. Bowyer is eighth in the point standings. He has three top fives on the year, but is winless. Bowyer hasn’t won at Daytona but he has two top 5’s and six top 10’s. His average finish here is 13.2, while his driver ratings is 89.1, which ranks sixth.
