Newman wins the pole

Ryan Newman will start up front for Sunday night’s Coca-Cola 600 from Charlotte Motor Speedway after winning the pole on Thursday.

Even though he isn’t up front, Jimmie Johnson is still the favorite to win the race.

Johnson has been given 3/1 odds to win the race according to odds makers at the online sports book Other short odds to win are Kyle Busch (6/1), Denny Hamlin (8/1), Kurt Busch (8/1), and Jeff Gordon (8/1).

Johnson won this event from 2003-05. He also finished second in 2006, but has not finished inside of 10th the last three years. Kurt Busch has not done well at Charlotte, failing to get into the top 10 the last four years in this race. On the year, Kurt Busch is ninth in the standings, 237 points out of first, but he is coming off a win in the All-Star Race last weekend at this track. Jeff Gordon won this event in 1994 and recently, he finished fourth in 2008. In his career, he has five wins and 16 top 5’s at this track. His average finish in Charlotte is 15.7 while his driver rating is 88.5, which ranks sixth in the series. Gordon sits sixth in the current standings, 163 points out of first. He is winless this year but has five top 5’s. Gordon qualified 15th for Sunday’s race.
