DARLINGTON, SC (TheSpread) – Despite a tough start to 2011, Kasey Kahne got a bit of positive momentum started on Friday as he won the pole for Saturday’s Showtime Southern 500.

The pole is the first this year for Kahne, who has just one top five this year in nine races.

According to oddsmakers at online sports book SBGGLOBAL.com both Carl Edwards and Denny Hamlin and are favored to win this race as each has 6/1 odds. Other short odds to win are Kyle Busch (7/1), Jeff Gordon (7/1), and Kahne (7/1).

Hamlin is 17th in the standings right now. He has just one top 5 and two top 10’s on the year. Hamlin has one win at Darlington and an average finish of 6.6. Hamlin’s driver rating at this track is 109.1, which ranks third in the series. Hamlin will start third on Saturday.

Edwards leads the point standings thanks to his 7 top 10’s in nine races, which is most of any driver in the series. Edwards also has one win on the year. Edwards is winless at Darlington with an average finish of 15.6 and a driver rating of 87.0, which ranks 13th among active drivers. Edwards qualified fourth for Saturday’s race.

Kyle Busch is coming off a win last week and he is now third in the standings, 30 points out of first. Busch has two wins and 5 top 5’s on the year but he also has two DNF’s. Busch has one win at Darlington with an average finish of 18.2 and a driver rating of 97.2, which ranks sixth in the series. Busch will start 14th in Saturday’s race.

Gordon is 16th in the point standings. He has one win and three top 5’s on the year but also has two DNF’s on the year. Gordon has been dominant at Darlington, as he has seven wins and 18 top 5’s in his career. His average finish at the track is 11.0 and his driver rating is 117.6, which is best in the series. Gordon qualified fifth.

Kahne is coming off a third-place finish last week, which snapped a three-race streak of finishing outside the top 20. Khane has not won a race since the 2009 season. At Darlington, Kahne is winless, but he has two top 5’s. His average finish at this track is 15.9 and his driver rating is 90.3.
