Date Information: The Daytona 500 was pushed back a one week from the traditional President’s Day weekend to the final weekend in February. To maintain the end of the season schedule, the off Sprint Cup weekend typically scheduled in March will now be eliminated.
The reason for the push back was three-fold. One, it shortens the racing season by one week. Two, it maintains momentum in the early part of the racing season, which includes fan interest, TV viewership and media coverage. Lastly, the move back offers a better opportunity for fans to create some separation between the Daytona 500 and the Super Bowl.
Previous Daytona 500 Winners: Trevor Bayne won the latest Daytona 500 in shocking fashion. He was an 80/1 long shot entering the race and took home the checkered flag after starting in the 32nd position. It was the third time in the last five years that a driver starting at least 30 spots back had won the race: Kevin Harvick won the 2007 Daytona 500 after starting 34th, while Matt Kenseth won in 2009 while starting in 39th. Jamie McMurray won in 2010 while starting in 13th, while Ryan Newman won in 2008 while starting 12th.
