Bayne surprisingly wins Dayonta 500

2011 Daytona 500 Results Trevor Bayne

DAYTONA BEACH, FL (TheSpread) – In one of the most unlikely scenarios in Daytona 500 history, 20-year old Trevor Bayne won the Great American Race in just his second start in Sprint Cup history.

View Current NASCAR Odds

Bayne, who just turned 20 on Saturday, is the youngest driver to ever win a Daytona 500 and he did so by playing helper most of the race, aiding in drafting for many of the drivers during the race.

But, following a few late cautions, Bayne found himself in the lead and he used a push from Bobby Labonte to get enough of a lead to hold off a surging Carl Edwards to claim the 2011 title by 0.118 seconds.

According to oddsmakers at online sports book SBGGLOBAL.com, Bayne had 80/1 odds to win Sunday’s race, meaning a $100 wager on him will pay out an additional $8,000. Bayne was not even expected to be a full-time Sprint Cup driver in 2011, but perhaps that will change with Sunday’s win.

Sunday’s race was as wild as advertised as it featured 16 cautions and 74 lead changes. The 74 lead changes was a new record for the Daytona 500.

Fan favorite, Dale Earnhardt Jr. found a way to get into contention for most of the day but a wreck on a green-white-checkered restart caused him to finish in 24th place.
