PITTSBURGH (AP) -The Pittsburgh Pirates claimed infielder Josh Wilson from Tampa Bay and pitcher Ty Taubenheim from Toronto on Monday, adding both to their 40-man roster.
To make room for the two, the Pirates designated first baseman Brad Eldred and right-hander Brian Rogers for assignment. Both must pass through waivers before they can be reassigned to Triple-A Indianapolis.
Wilson hit .251 with two homers and 24 RBIs in 90 games with Tampa Bay last season. The right-handed Taubenheim was 1-5 with a 5.40 ERA in 13 Blue Jays games over the last two seasons. He spent most of last season with Toronto’s Double-A and Triple-A farm clubs and had a 6-8 record.
Eldred, once one of the Pirates’ top power-hitting prospects, had 12 homers in 190 at-bats with Pittsburgh in 2005. He sat out most of the 2006 season because of a broken left thumb, then hit only .209 with 15 homers and 45 RBIs in 311 at-bats with Indianapolis last season.
