CINCINNATI (AP) -Ken Griffey Jr. tied Frank Robinson for sixth place on the career home run list and Kyle Lohse pitched a four-hitter as Cincinnati beat Arizona 8-1 on Friday night.
Griffey capped the Reds’ three-run fifth inning with his 586th homer – 23rd of the season – a two-run shot off Micah Owings.
Adam Dunn and Brandon Phillips also homered for the Reds, who won consecutive games for the first time since beating Cleveland on June 10 and the Angels on June 12.
Lohse (5-10) had five strikeouts and two walks in his sixth career complete game and second this season.
Arizona’s only hit before the ninth was Orlando Hudson’s double to lead off the fourth. Lohse allowed a run in the ninth on three singles and a double play grounder.
Owings (5-4) allowed six runs and six hits in 4 2-3 innings.
Pirates 8, Cubs 4
PITTSBURGH (AP) – Xavier Nady homered and drove in three runs to support Paul Maholm’s pitching and hitting, as Pittsburgh won its fourth straight.
The Cubs had won 11 of 13 and were 21-10 since June 3, the best record in the majors over that span, until being limited to five hits over seven-plus innings by Maholm (5-11). Maholm is 4-0 in five career starts against the Pirates.
Maholm gave up four runs, two scoring after he left the game following singles by Alfonso Soriano and Mike Fontenot to start the eighth. Shawn Chacon walked Derrek Lee to load the bases before giving up sacrifice flies to Aramis Ramirez and Mark DeRosa to cut the lead to 7-4. Freddy Sanchez, who had homered, doubled in a run in the eighth for the Pirates.
Maholm allowed five hits in seven innings with three walks and five strikeouts. Damaso Marte pitched a scoreless ninth in his first save opportunity of the season.
Jason Marquis (6-5) gave up six runs and eight hits in 4 2-3 innings.
Brewers 6, Nationals 2
WASHINGTON (AP) – Ryan Braun homered twice, Dave Bush took a shutout into the seventh inning and Milwaukee snapped a three-game losing streak.
Braun hit a solo shot and Kevin Mench a three-run drive in a four-run first inning against Mike Bacsik (2-6). Milwaukee has homered in 15 consecutive games, its longest streak since a 19-game run in 1996.
Bush (7-7) improved to 4-1 in his last five starts. He went seven innings, allowing one run and seven hits. He matched a season high with seven strikeouts.
Ronnie Belliard homered and had four hits for the Nationals, who have dropped nine of 11.
Corey Hart of the Brewers tripled with two outs in the second, extending his hitting streak to 22 games.
Astros 4, Mets 0
HOUSTON (AP) – Wandy Rodriguez threw a four-hitter for his first complete game and Lance Berkman had a two-run homer to lead Houston.
Rodriguez (6-7), whose previous longest outing was 7 2-3 innings, struck out eight, tying a career high, and walked one.
It was the third time the Mets have been shut out this season, and the third shutout for Houston.
Berkman, who has homered in five of his last 10 games, hit his 15th of the season in the fifth inning.
Mike Pelfrey (0-7), in his second start since being recalled from Triple-A on Sunday, allowed four runs and seven hits in six innings.
Mets All-Star shortstop Jose Reyes failed to run out a ground ball to third that he apparently thought would be foul to end the eighth inning. He was replaced by Ruben Gotay in the bottom of the eighth. It was the second time this week that Reyes was removed from a game after failing to run hard on a grounder.
Giants 4, Cardinals 3
ST. LOUIS (AP) – Noah Lowry struck out five in six innings to win his third straight start, and Ray Durham had an RBI single for San Francisco, which scored three runs on a misplay by St. Louis center fielder So Taguchi in the fifth.
Barry Bonds of the Giants grounded out and drew three walks as he remained at 751 homers, four shy of matching Hank Aaron’s career record.
Lowry (9-6) allowed one run and four hits and didn’t let a runner past second base until Juan Encarnacion’s RBI double in the sixth. Randy Messenger came on with two on and two outs in the ninth and got Taguchi to fly out for his first career save.
Mike Maroth (0-1) gave up four runs, one earned, and five hits in five innings in his third start with St. Louis since being acquired in a June 22 trade with Detroit.
