SAN DIEGO (AP) – The San Diego Padres have promoted Dave Roberts to bench coach.
Roberts, who had been first base coach the last three seasons, replaces Rick Renteria, who was hired as manager of the Chicago Cubs on Nov. 7.
Jose Valentin will replace Roberts as first base coach.
Valentin managed Class A Fort Wayne the last two seasons, leading the Padres’ Midwest League entry into the playoffs in both years.
During his 16-year career as an infielder, he played for Milwaukee, the Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets He was signed by the Padres out of Puerto Rico as a non-drafted free agent in 1986, playing five seasons in the system before being dealt to Milwaukee in 1992 in the trade that brought Gary Sheffield to San Diego.
