NEW YORK (AP) – Derek Jeter was unable to put weight on his left leg and was helped off the field in the 12th inning of the American League championship series opener.
The New York Yankees shortstop dived to his left for a grounder hit by Detroit’s Jhonny Peralta and winced in pain as he flipped the ball away on Saturday night. He then rolled onto his stomach, and a collective gasp was heard at Yankee Stadium when he didn’t get up.
Jeter remained on his side, rolling slightly, as trainer Steve Donahue and manager Joe Girardi checked him out. He was helped up, and he put an arm around Girardi and Donahue. They coaxed him off the field with Jeter not moving his left leg.
