DENVER (AP) -The Colorado Rockies’ bullpen has fueled their playoff run as much as their big bats.
Matt Herges, Brian Fuentes and Manny Corpas combined to throw 2 2-3 shutout innings in relief of Ubaldo Jimenez on Saturday night, leading the Rockies to a 2-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies that completed their three-game playoff sweep.
Jimenez allowed one run and three hits in 6 1-3 innings. Herges got two outs, Fuentes struck out two in a scoreless inning and Corpas worked the ninth for this third save of the series.
Colorado’s bullpen gave up only one earned run over 11 2-3 innings in the sweep.
“Their bullpen in the series was absolutely fantastic,” Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. “They shut us down.”
Corpas has completed 22 of 23 save opportunities since taking over the closer’s role from Fuentes in early July.
Colorado manager Clint Hurdle said it’s the best bullpen he’s seen in his time with the Rockies.
“It’s versatile, it’s got depth and a lot of good skill set out there,” he said.
