NEW YORK (AP) -Chipper Jones was out of the Atlanta Braves’ lineup again Tuesday night with a strained muscle on his right side.
Jones was a late scratch before Monday night’s 3-2 loss to the New York Mets after he hurt himself during batting practice. The team said he is day to day.
Jones’ absence makes things difficult for Atlanta, which began the day five games back of NL wild card-leading San Diego. The star third baseman is batting .330 with 25 home runs, 39 doubles and 87 RBIs.
Andruw Jones also was a late scratch Monday with the flu, but he was back in the lineup for Tuesday’s game against the Mets. He didn’t look too good though, wearing a hooded sweat shirt and coughing periodically in the clubhouse before the game.
Andruw Jones was hitting .223 with 24 homers and 85 RBIs.
Atlanta also purchased the contract of catcher Clint Sammons from Double-A Mississippi.
