CLEVELAND (AP) – Indians All-Star pitcher Justin Masterson has left a start against Baltimore in the second inning with an apparent arm injury.
Masterson was pulled by manager Terry Francona, who made two visits to the mound in the second. Masterson first showed discomfort during an at-bat by Matt Wieters. Francona came out with a trainer to check on his big right-hander, who stayed in the game.
However, after giving up a single to Wieters, Masterson paused between pitches to Nick Markakis and shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera waved toward the dugout. Masterson was dejected as he left the field and threw a cup of water in the dugout before heading to the clubhouse.
The Indians had no immediate word on Masterson’s injury.
Cleveland can’t afford to be without its ace. The Indians entered the week just 3 1/2 games out in the AL wild-card chase.
