OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -The Toronto Blue Jays signed left-hander Joe Kennedy to a minor league contract on Tuesday with an eye toward adding the veteran to their bullpen in September.
Designated for assignment by Arizona on Aug. 15, Kennedy was assigned to the Jays’ Triple-A club in Syracuse, where he’s expected to remain for the final week of the month.
Kennedy will likely join Toronto when rosters are expanded in September. He didn’t have much success in that role with Arizona. His ERA in three relief appearances was 20.25, but Blue Jays general manager J.P. Ricciardi said the team is hoping to “capture lightning in a bottle” and use Kennedy in a role similar to how they used reliever Scott Schoeneweis in 2005-06.
Kennedy began the season in Oakland as a starter but was 3-9 with a 4.37 ERA. He appeared in 27 games with the A’s and made 16 starts before being placed on waivers. The Diamondbacks claimed him on Aug. 4.
