BALTIMORE (AP) -Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer left Saturday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles after hurting his left hamstring while running the bases in the eighth inning.
Mauer appeared appeared to injure himself rounding second and pulled up between second and third on Torii Hunter’s double down the left-field line. He limped safely into third base.
After conferring with a Twins trainer and manager Ron Gardenhire, Mauer was replaced by pinch-runner Mike Redmond, who went in to catch in the bottom of the inning.
Mauer missed 29 games in May and June due to a strained left quadriceps. He is hitting .294 with five home runs and 53 RBIs.
Before Saturday’s game, Gardenhire said he planned to start Redmond behind the plate Sunday to give Mauer’s sore ankles a day off.
