MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -The Texas Rangers placed right-handed reliever Willie Eyre on the 15-day disabled list Saturday to make room for starter Kameron Loe.
Loe came off the disabled list to take the mound at Minnesota after sitting out with back spasms since July 29. Manager Ron Washington said before the game that he wasn’t worried about Loe’s health, but he also wanted to make sure he had enough healthy relievers around. So instead of sending someone to the minors, Eyre was sent to the disabled list with stiffness in his elbow.
Eyre took the loss on Thursday against Kansas City after allowing four runs on three hits and a walk while getting only two outs in the eighth inning.
Washington said Eyre would be ready to return on Sept. 1 when he’s eligible to be activated. That’s also the day teams can expand their rosters to 40 players.
Eyre is 4-6 with a 5.16 ERA in 68 innings this year.
With all the injuries they’ve had to starting pitchers, the Rangers were still mulling their rotation for next week and have not officially declared a starter for Tuesday’s game at Baltimore. One candidate is right-hander Edinson Volquez, who has moved rapidly through the minors this season and is currently at Triple-A Oklahoma.
