CINCINNATI (AP) -The San Diego Padres will place catcher Michael Barrett on the 15-day disabled list Saturday after hurting his head sliding into second base Friday night against the Cincinnati Reds.
Barrett, who was acquired from the Chicago Cubs on June 20, suffered a slight head injury while trying to break up a double play in the sixth inning of the Padres’ 12-7, 11-inning win.
Barrett played the bottom of the sixth before Josh Bard pinch-hit for him in the top of the seventh. He was experiencing concussion-like symptoms, San Diego spokesman Warren Miller said.
Manager Bud Black said the Padres will purchase the contract of Pat Laforest from Triple-A Portland to fill Barrett’s spot on the roster.
Barrett was hitting .248 with nine homers and 37 RBIs in 315 at-bats.
