NEW YORK (AP) -The Florida Marlins purchased the contract of pitcher Daniel Barone from Triple-A Albuquerque on Friday and optioned right-hander Mauro Zarate to their top farm team.
Barone started against the New York Mets, his major league debut, and struck out his first batter: All-Star Jose Reyes. The 24-year-old right-hander went 7-0 with a 4.09 ERA in 10 starts for Albuquerque after he was promoted from Double-A Carolina in June. He owns a career record of 23-16 with a 3.72 ERA in the minors.
“He’s got good command of all his pitches,” Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez said. “He’s won at every level.”
Zarate made one relief appearance for Florida, allowing three runs – two earned – and two hits in 1 1-3 innings.
To make room for Barone on the 40-man roster, the Marlins transferred right-hander Josh Johnson (strained right forearm) from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day DL. The club also announced that outfielder Joe Borchard cleared waivers and was sent outright to Albuquerque.
