CLEVELAND (AP) – The Indians officially optioned reliever Vinnie Pestano to Triple-A Columbus to make room for newly acquired left-hander Marc Rzepczynski
Pestano was told of the demotion following Tuesday’s win over Chicago. The right-hander was emotional and seemed stunned as he packed his bags and said goodbye to teammates, some of whom were also shocked that he was being sent down.
Pestano has struggled this season. He spent time on the disabled list with an elbow injury and has posted a 4.05 ERA. He filled in as Cleveland’s closer when Chris Perez was on the DL, but Pestano was not his usually reliable self.
Last year, Pestano had a 2.57 ERA in 70 games and was second in the AL with 36 holds.
The Indians acquired Rzepczynski on Tuesday in a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals. He has reported to Cleveland and is eligible to pitch Wednesday.
