DENVER (AP) -The Padres optioned outfielder Terrmel Sledge to Triple-A Portland on Wednesday.
To fill his spot on the roster, the Padres recalled right-handed pitcher Clay Hensley from Portland. Hensley was 2-6 and had a 6.90 ERA in 11 starts for Portland.
Sledge was hitting .216, with six home runs and 16 RBIs.
“I felt it would be better to have an extra arm for the last game here in Denver and the games we have in Houston,” Padres’ manager Bud Black said. “Clay also gives us the versatility of being able to start or work out of the bullpen.”
