OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -The Oakland Athletics scratched third baseman Eric Chavez from the starting lineup moments before their game against the Texas Rangers on Monday night because of a sore back.
Chavez is mired in a 4-for-22 slump despite hitting three homers in his last five games. He is batting .245 with 15 homers and 46 RBIs this season.
Oakland made an earlier change to its usual lineup, inserting new starting catcher Kurt Suzuki when catcher Jason Kendall was traded to the Chicago Cubs. Marco Scutaro replaced Chavez in the starting lineup for the A’s, who had lost seven straight games.
