SEATTLE (AP) -Gary Sheffield stood behind his controversial comments about Joe Torre, Barry Bonds and the New York Yankees before the game, then hit the 12th grand slam of his career to lead Detroit to a 6-3 victory over Seattle on Friday night.
Sheffield fielded questions before the game about his comments to HBO's Real Sports regarding the treatment of black and white players by Torre in the Yankees' clubhouse and his past relationship with Bonds.
Jeremy Bonderman (10-1) pitched seven innings, struck out five, and allowed just six hits. Todd Jones gave up two hits in the ninth before getting his 23rd save.
Sheffield hit Detroit's sixth grand slam of the season in the third off Jarrod Washburn (8-7).
Angels 2, Rangers 1
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Casey Kotchman hit an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning for Los Angeles.
Gary Matthews Jr., the former Ranger who signed a five-year, $50 million contract with the Angels, legged out a double to left-center that skipped past shortstop Michael Young. Ron Mahay relieved Joaquin Benoit (3-3), and Matthews advanced on a groundout before Kotchman won it.
Francisco Rodriguez (3-2), fresh off a save in Tuesday's All-Star game, pitched a hitless ninth for the win.
Texas first baseman Mark Teixeira, activated from the disabled list after missing five weeks with a strained right quadriceps muscle, went 1-for-3 with a ground-rule double.
Twins 5, Athletics 3
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Johan Santana allowed four hits and struck out eight in seven scoreless innings to lead Minnesota.
Santana (11-6), the reigning AL Cy Young winner, is a 41-4 with a major league-leading 427 strikeouts in games played after the All-Star break since 2003.
The left-hander didn't allow a runner past first base and retired 10 of the last 11 batters he faced to drop his ERA to 2.60.
Luis Castillo had two hits and two RBIs for the Twins, who handed the A's their sixth loss in seven games.
Lenny DiNardo (3-6) gave up three runs - two earned - and eight hits in five innings for Oakland, which scored three runs in the ninth, including Eric Chavez's two-run homer. Joe Nathan came on to get the last out and earn his 17th save.
Blue Jays 6, Red Sox 5
BOSTON (AP) - Alex Rios had three hits and drove in the go-ahead run for Toronto, and Shaun Marcum survived a shaky start to win for the first time in nearly a month.
Rios and Reed Johnson hit consecutive RBI doubles in the sixth inning to erase a 5-4 deficit and help the Blue Jays snap a four-game losing streak to the Red Sox.
After allowing all five of his runs in the first three innings, Marcum (5-3) settled down to earn his first win since June 16, and improve to 4-1 since joining the rotation on May 13.
Marcum allowed seven hits and one walk in six innings. He gave up three earned runs and struck out six.
Manny Ramirez hit a two-run homer in the first inning, his first since June 20. He had an RBI single and Mike Lowell added a two-run triple in a three-run third that gave the Red Sox a 5-4 lead.
Jeremy Accardo pitched a scoreless 1 1-3 innings for his 12th save in 13 chances.
Toronto scored two runs with two outs off Boston reliever Kyle Snyder (1-2) in the sixth to take the lead for good.
Devil Rays 6, Yankees 4
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Scott Kazmir allowed four hits in six innings to outpitch Roger Clemens and earn his first win at home in more than a year.
Kazmir (6-6), an All-Star a year ago who then missed much of the second half because of an injury, yielded one unearned run and struck out seven. He won at Tropicana Field for the first time since pitching a two-hit shutout against Boston on July 3, 2006. He was 0-4 in 14 starts during the stretch of futility at home.
Josh Wilson and Dioner Navarro each drove in two runs for Tampa Bay, which won for just the second time in 16 games. Delmon Young had three hits, scored twice and drove in a run with a seventh-inning single that made it 6-2.
Clemens (2-4) allowed five hits and five runs in 5 1-3 innings.
Jorge Posada and Hideki Matsui hit solo homers to trim New York's deficit to 6-4 in the eighth.
Orioles 2, White Sox 0
BALTIMORE (AP) - Erik Bedard allowed three hits over seven innings and Nick Markakis and Corey Patterson homered off Mark Buehrle to lead Baltimore.
Bedard (8-4) struck out seven to increase his AL-leading total to 156. The left-hander walked two and allowed only three runners past first base in extending his run of scoreless innings to 16.
Buehrle (6-5), who was pitching for the first time since signing a $56 million, four-year contract extension on Sunday, permitted six hits and a walk in his third complete game of the season.
Chris Ray worked the ninth to complete the four-hitter and earn his 15th save.
Markakis led off the fourth with his 10th home run. Patterson made it 2-0 in the fifth with his third homer of the season.
Indians 5, Royals 4
CLEVELAND (AP) - Ryan Garko singled home the winning run with one out in the ninth inning for Cleveland.
Victor Martinez drove in two runs for the Indians, who improved baseball's best home record to 32-12. Cleveland has won nine of its last 10 at Jacobs Field, where it plays 15 of its next 19 games.
Travis Hafner doubled with one out off Zach Greinke (4-5) in the ninth and was replaced by pinch-runner Mike Rouse. After an intentional walk, Garko lined the first pitch to center.
Indians closer Joe Borowski (2-3) got the win despite blowing a save for the first time in 14 chances since May 13. Tony Pena's sacrifice fly tied it at 4.
The Royals took a 3-1 lead in the third on an RBI groundout by Ross Gload and Alex Gordon's run-scoring single.
