BALTIMORE (AP) -The Los Angeles Angels designated Shea Hillenbrand for assignment Friday, two days after informing him of the pending move.
The 31-year-old Hillenbrand signed as a free agent in December. He appeared in 53 games this season and had complained about his diminished role after being an everyday player the past six years with Boston, Arizona, Toronto and San Francisco.
The emergence of rookies Reggie Willits (.337) and Casey Kotchman (.319) severely cut into Hillenbrand’s playing time. Hillenbrand, primarily a designated hitter this year, batted .254 with three homers and 22 RBIs in 197 at-bats.
The Angeles recalled outfielder Nick Gorneault from Triple-A Salt Lake to take Hillenbrand’s spot on the roster. Gorneault hit .220 with 10 home runs and 29 RBIs in 79 games at Salt Lake
