SAN DIEGO (AP) -Left-hander Nick Schmidt, the Padres’ first-round pick in this month’s amateur draft, agreed Thursday to a deal that includes a $1.29 million signing bonus.
Schmidt was the 23rd overall pick out of Arkansas.
He went 11-3 with a 2.69 ERA in 18 starts this season and finished as the school’s career leader with 345 strikeouts.
Schmidt played for the U.S. national team last summer, going 3-1 with a 1.31 ERA in 34 1-3 innings.
The Padres have signed or agreed to terms with 32 of their 42 draft picks.
