SEATTLE (AP) -The Cincinnati Reds signed high school catcher Devin Mesoraco on Friday, the 15th overall pick in this month’s draft.
Mesoraco will get a $1.4 million signing bonus. The Reds assigned him to their rookie league team in Sarasota, Fla.
“Devin is a little better athlete than you normally get at that position. It is a hard position to fill in the majors and in the minors, so we’re pleased to find a catcher who is such a good athlete with such good makeup,” Reds senior director of scouting Chris Buckley said.
Mesoraco hit .467 with four homers and 21 RBIs in his senior season at Punxsutawney (Pa.) High School. He was selected the Gatorade player of the year for Pennsylvania.
Mesoraco was the third catcher the Reds’ have taken with their top draft pick, joining Dan LaMar (1979) and Dan Wilson (1990).
