MIAMI (AP) -Tampa Bay center fielder B.J. Upton left the Devil Rays’ game against the Florida Marlins on Friday night because of a strained left quadriceps.
Upton suffered the injury while grounding out to shortstop in the top of the first inning. He appeared to alter his stride shortly before reaching first base, then remained down on the grass in right field for a few minutes before hobbling off the field.
The Devil Rays said Upton was day-to-day and would be re-evaluated Saturday.
Upton is batting a team-best .320 with nine home runs and 31 RBIs this season for Tampa Bay.
Elijah Dukes, who was out of the lineup Friday after going 0-for-21 in his first five games this month and seeing his average drop to .195, replaced Upton in center field in the bottom of the inning.
