ST. LOUIS (AP) -The Chicago Cubs demoted left-hander Rich Hill to Triple-A Iowa on Saturday, hours after he walked four batters and failed to survive the first inning.
Manager Lou Piniella said Jon Lieber, who allowed five hits in 3 2-3 innings of scoreless relief in Friday night’s 5-3, 11-inning loss to the Cardinals, would replace Hill in the rotation and start on Wednesday.
Hill is 1-0 with a 4.12 ERA in five starts and has walked 18 in 19 2-3 innings.
Right-hander Sean Gallagher, 22, was recalled from Iowa and was expected to join the team in time for Saturday’s game against the Cardinals. Gallagher is 2-2 with a 3.10 ERA in five starts for Iowa.
