SAN DIEGO (AP) -Left-hander Royce Ring was recalled from Triple-A Portland on Monday to give the San Diego Padres a fresh arm after their relievers worked 12 innings in a 17-inning loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Rookie left-hander Justin Hampson, who worked the final four innings and took the loss after allowing an unearned run in the 17th on Sunday, was optioned to Portland to make room for Ring.
Ring had a 1.32 ERA in 11 relief appearances with Portland. He didn’t allow a run in his last five appearances.
Ring and Heath Bell were obtained from the New York Mets on Nov. 15 for right-hander Jon Adkins and outfielder Ben Johnson. Ring is from suburban La Mesa and attended San Diego State.
Hampson was recalled on April 19. He was 0-1 with a 3.00 ERA in three relief appearances.
