DETROIT (AP) -Center fielder Curtis Granderson was activated from the disabled list Wednesday and ready to play his first game of the season for the Detroit Tigers.
Granderson broke a finger on his right hand late in spring training when he was hit by a pitch. The leadoff man missed the first 21 games of the year for the Tigers, who have gotten off to a slow start.
Last season, Granderson became one of only four players in major league history with 20 home runs, 20 doubles, 20 triples and 20 stolen bases. NL MVP Jimmy Rollins of Philadelphia also accomplished the feat in 2007.
Granderson was recalled from a rehabilitation assignment with Class A West Michigan before the Tigers played Texas. Outfielder Clete Thomas (.295, five RBIs) was optioned to Triple-A Toledo.
Detroit second baseman Placido Polanco, who had missed the last four games with a sore back, was expected to return on Thursday. Designated hitter Gary Sheffield, who had missed the last three games because of a sore shoulder, could be back in the lineup on Friday.
