BALTIMORE (AP) -Jaret Wright will pitch to Ramon Hernandez on Tuesday night. Nothing strange about that – except the venue won’t be Camden Yards.
The right-hander and veteran catcher begin their rehabilitation assignments together in Frederick with the Class A Keys. Wright is on the 15-day disabled list with a sore right shoulder and Hernandez has been sidelined since opening day with a muscle strain in his rib cage.
So, on a day in which the Orioles face the Oakland Athletics, Wright and Hernandez will be taking on the Wilmington Blue Rocks.
Orioles manager Sam Perlozzo said Monday that Wright will throw around 60 pitches and Hernandez will catch for about six innings. If all goes well, Wright will return to start against the Cleveland Indians on Sunday and Hernandez will play another game in Frederick on Wednesday before being activated.
“If we get lucky, we’ll have him by Thursday,” Perlozzo said.
Hernandez feels the most pain when he swings the bat, so he will probably be the Keys’ designated hitter Wednesday.
“We’ll see how he is from there,” Perlozzo said. “It’s going to be up to him. He’s been pretty good with us telling us that he needs a little more time. We’re certainly going to do what he says because when we get him back, we want him back for good.”
