CLEVELAND (AP) -Starter Jake Westbrook was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a pulled muscle in his side Tuesday, more trouble for the struggling Cleveland Indians.
Westbrook, one of the few players the defending AL Central champions could count on so far this season, is 1-2 with a 2.73 ERA. This will be his fifth career trip to the DL.
The Indians have lost eight of 11 as they open a three-game series in Kansas City. Cleveland’s offense has been awful as the club is batting an AL-low .235. The pitching hasn’t much better. Closer Joe Borowski is on the DL with arm soreness and Cy Young winner C.C. Sabathia will take an 0-3 record into his start Tuesday night against the Royals.
The team also recalled outfielder Ben Francisco from Triple-A Buffalo. One of the last players sent to the minors at spring training, he was batting .208 with three RBIs in 18 games for the Bisons.
Cleveland has been going with a platoon in left field, but both Jason Michaels and David Dellucci have started slowly.
